January 18 – 20, 2020
Almost since he joined Troop 356, Drake Scott had lobbied to have a camping weekend at Lakewood Retreat in Brooksville (west central Florida). Once Drake became SPL, his first order of business was to make Lakewood our January camping trip. Although it is primarily a Christian camp and conference center, they were happy to have Troop 356 use their facilities.
The scouts were able to participate in many activities such as archery, swimming, shuffleboard, and zipline. Mr. Swann took Logan and Dylan to task at Gaga Ball followed by a canoeing trip on the camp’s large lake. There was even a petting zoo with various animals including a donkey who liked Jaeden’s Coke! Popping Kettle corn at night in a big iron pot ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. But the most memorable event was the low ropes course. The scouts were put through a series of obstacles designed to teach teamwork. The instructor gave life lessons throughout the activity to help scouts establish the need for planning and cooperation.
Overall, it was a very nice weekend and could be a regular destination for 356.
